Amy's Story
"Amy" is a 3 year old girl who was brought to Catholic Charities of Jackson County by her mother after she reported that her father had sexually abused her. Amy was removed from her father’s care and placed in the sole custody of her mother. As expected, Amy acted out with temper tantrums, refusing to follow directions and aggressive behavior towards her brother. Amy was also suffering from nightmares, irritability and occasional bed-wetting which is typical in cases of abuse.

Due to Amy’s age, "play therapy" was the preferred method of treatment. Through play, Amy was able to work through her feelings of abuse and separation from her father. Amy’s play slowly transitioned from that of identifying primarily as a victim to identifying more as an aggressor. Eventually, the hope is that Amy will no longer identify as either victim or aggressor but become more of an assertive protector. Amy’s mother is an integral part of Amy’s therapy and is learning ways to help her daughter cope, as well as setting limits and consequences for Amy’s behavior.

Through the Kid Care Program and Catholic Charities of Jackson County, Amy was able to extend her therapy at a rate that was affordable for her mother. Without that extension, Amy would not have been able to continue with the necessary therapy and now shows great improvement in her treatment of others and her ability to soothe herself.
